Build your own veggie patch

Setting up your own veggie patch is fun and easy! Just follow these simple steps.

Firstly, where should I locate it?

You need an area that get a lot of sun (approx. 6 hours a day). It needs to be area that does not have to compete with root systems of large trees and shurbs for nutrients.

Tip 1: Make your garden twice as wide as the length of your arm so you easily reach everything that it contains.

I have chosen the position, so what now?

Dig the soil over the depth of a fork. After digging, add compost, organic matter and manure to ensure that soil is rich and nutritious for the soon to be planted veggies. Add some plant tonic, soil conditioner and slow release fertiliser.

It’s time to plant your veggies

It’s very easy – follow the directions given with the seeding on the back of the seed packet and remember to water them well.

Tip 2: Keep up the water for the first few weeks until plants have established themselves and then go to the schedule of giving them a deep soak a couple of times a week rather than superficial watering daily.

What do I need to do to maintain the veggie garden?

You will have to keep on top of weeds, as the weeds will compete for nutrients and potentially crowd your plants. A good mulch will help with weed prevention and also keep the water in the soil, where you want it.
